Who is the Earth's lover? You are. I am. The sun, the wind, the butterflies, the rivers and oceans and trees are.
From my journals:
I was told in meditation that I am the Earth’s lover. Not in a sexual way, but that I – and many thousands of others – are here to love the Earth. That’s all. And that the animals are too.
The Middle East corresponds to my heart. Lately my heart has been bothering me. I was told that millions of people are developing heart trouble right now (animals too) in sympathy with Earth because the Middle East is her heart chakra. That’s why Jesus came in there. Earth has a broken heart right now. We are each carrying a piece of the pain to relieve the burden on her. So I should bear my pains with pride, as a free will choice I made to help Earth. – September 4, 2002

An invitation was extended into the Universal Consciousness decades ago, and continues to ring through the cosmos. This is a call to please come help Mother Earth. I answered the call. If you are reading these words, you likely answered that same call. Some of us are native to Earth; others may have our origins in other places. No matter, we are here now as part of Earth's Ground Crew. I have not served in the military in this lifetime but feel that I have been "stationed" in various places on Earth as part of my work. Whether for a few days or a few decades, it was all part of a grand intelligent force.
We came because we love her. There is no other planet in existence like our precious beautiful Earth. Unlike traditional marriage or romantic relationships in which jealousy or insecurity can cause problems, this is the type of love that is meant to be shared and increased. The more people who love Earth, the better. We each bring a part of healing love to her. It may be reducing your use of toxic chemicals, or planting flowers and trees, or rescuing animals or tending bees. At this stage in my life, I can actively participate best by picking up trash so it isn't washed into the ocean.
I grew up in Southern California, left for many years, and returned in 2009. It was a bittersweet return as I have great love for other parts of the country but I knew it was my mission to return here. I looked forward to the environmental awareness that thrives in California and it didn't fail me; people picked up trash at the parks and beaches, children learned ecology in school, all was right with the world. Since that time, however, something has gone terribly wrong. Trash is everywhere and little children appear to be the worst offenders. Disposable plastic litter including snack containers, diapers and water bottles are everywhere. At the moment we have a huge die-off in the Pacific Ocean affecting Southern California fish, birds, seals and marine life, blamed on large algae blooms which are the result of heavy rain runoff carrying fertilizers to the ocean. The beach, one of our priceless earthly havens, is now toxic. I used to pull off my sandals at the park and walk barefoot in the grass, grounding myself to the Earth but started getting sick after doing that, and learned that the parks are frequently sprayed with antifungals and weed killers and pesticides. I got so discouraged that I stopped picking up trash on my walks.
This past weekend was Earth Day. At a park I watched some dedicated young people take a trash bag and pick up the nasty garbage that others had carelessly left behind, and they humbly reminded me that I need to return to the basics of loving Mother Earth. Spiritual practice is good and all, but sometimes we need to chop wood and carry water. We need to remember that we are living in earthly bodies, breathing Earth's air, drinking her water and partaking of the fruits of some practices that have harmed her. We have not always been good stewards. Our good intentions come and go with the tides, and we may lapse for days or weeks or years in our caretaking.
For the past few years I've developed more issues with my heart, and woke up this morning with symptoms of this heart problem increasing. Thinking back, I believe these symptoms increased at about the time I gave up in disgust at my fellow humans and stopped picking up trash.
I am the Earth's lover. And she is hurting and crying and sad. She needs her lovers to remind her that she is loved, appreciated, treasured. That she is beautiful despite her human-created scars. We need her more than she needs us. She has had multiple opportunities to dispose of us through natural disasters and carry on her own healing process without humanity, but she willfully chose to keep us close. Because that's what lovers do, for better and for worse. In sickness and in health. Tell her - and show her - that you love her.
